Star Dust – Lennert Van Laenen – Brass Band
Star Dust is a solo piece by Belgian composer Lennert Van Laenen, written for B-flat cornet and brass band. He composed the work in 2024 for his sister, Loranne Van Laenen. In this composition, the cornet takes center stage as the narrator of a musical story about the beauty, fragility, and complexity of a single speck of stardust floating through the vast emptiness of the universe.
The piece opens with a delicate and transparent accompaniment from the cornet section, from which the solo part slowly emerges. From this tranquil atmosphere, a lyrical melody unfolds, steadily growing in intensity and expression. As the story unfolds, the music builds toward an impressive tutti moment in which the soloist and brass band together create a majestic sound. Afterward, calm gradually returns, and the soloist is given the space to bring the piece to a close in all its simplicity. A moment of silence then seems almost inevitable.
With a difficulty level of 4 for the soloist and 3 for the brass band, Star Dust is accessible to a wide range of cornetists and ensembles. The piece does not require extreme technical virtuosity, but it does demand a good sense of tone, phrasing, and musical structure. As a result, it offers the soloist the opportunity to fully demonstrate both expressiveness and musicality.
With a duration of approximately 5 minutes and 20 seconds, “Star Dust” is particularly well-suited as a concert solo, exam piece, or competition piece. The careful orchestration ensures that the solo cornet remains audible at all times without disrupting the balance within the brass band.
What makes Star Dust is special is the combination of simplicity, imagination, and depth. Lennert Van Laenen creates a soundscape that feels both intimate and grand. The listener is taken on a journey through the silence of the universe, where a single tiny speck of stardust becomes a symbol of wonder, beauty, and transience.
With Star Dust , Lennert Van Laenen makes an atmospheric and contemporary contribution to the cornet repertoire. The piece is highly recommended for any cornetist looking for a lyrical and expressive solo with a strong narrative quality.
