Wim Bex was born in Sint-Truiden in 1977 and began his instrumental studies with Marcel Vandereycken at the music school in Tongeren. He initially played trumpet, switching to tenor trombone four years later. After studying music in Hasselt, he continued his training at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven, where his teacher Michel Tilkin inspired him to take up the bass trombone.
After around twelve years as a freelance musician with most Belgian orchestras and several orchestras abroad, he joined the Limburg Symphony Orchestra in Maastricht in 2009. Following its merger with the Brabant Orchestra in 2013, the ensemble became known as philharmonie zuidnederland.
In 2008, he composed his first work, Vademecum for Bass Trombone, at the request of Geert De Vos, who also recorded it. Its positive reception encouraged him to continue composing, leading to solo works for tenor trombone, trumpet and tuba, all of which have been recorded on CD.
His most influential musical mentors include Ludo Verjans, Michel Tilkin and Wim Henderickx. They taught him to approach a score naturally and logically, with an open and positive attitude, always serving the story behind the notes.
