A Tiny Trilogy – Tenor Horn Solo and Brass Band – Lode Violet

A Tiny Trilogy by Lode Violet was composed for Tim De Maeseneer and appears on his debut solo CD The Birth of Time Echoes. This piece was recorded in collaboration with Brass Band Willebroek at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Tim is the solo horn player there. The title reflects the structure of the composition. Three concise but interconnected sections of brass band work, each telling a different story with a shared protagonist. This central character is embodied by a constantly evolving leitmotif – C, D, E, A♭, G. This weaves through the music, reflecting the protagonist’s journey of self-discovery and identity. As the trilogy unfolds, the leitmotif transforms. This reflects the emotional and psychological shifts of the main character. The denouement of this story comes in the last four bars of the brass band piece, where the music reveals whether the protagonist has truly found his authentic self.

For anyone interested in contemporary brass compositions and tenor horn solos, A Tiny Trilogy offers an excellent introduction to Lode Violet’s work. Thanks to the collaboration with Brass Band Willebroek and the virtuoso performance by Tim De Maeseneer, listeners experience both technical perfection and emotional depth. This piece is ideal for musicians who want to expand their repertoire with modern solo works for tenor horn. But also for enthusiasts who want to explore contemporary brass music.

A Tiny Trilogy combines virtuosity with expressive storytelling. As such, it offers a profound experience for musicians and listeners alike. The work shows the versatility of the tenor horn in a contemporary compositional context and underscores Lode Violet’s artistic vision. The collaboration with Brass Band Willebroek further enhances the quality and richness of the performance. This makes this piece a valuable addition to the repertoire of any professional or amateur musician.
