Song t(w)o the North – Lode Violet – Brass band
“Song t(w)o the North” by Lode Violet is an impressive opening piece for brass band, written for Brass Band Willebroek and Frans Violet on the occasion of the gala concert of the World Music Contest Kerkrade 2026. This opening piece for brass band is a musical ode to the North and combines Dutch tradition with references to the Wilhelmus.
The title Song t(w)o the North refers to the earlier work Sång till Norden by the same composer. Just as in that composition, Lode Violet draws inspiration from two short motifs taken from a national anthem. In Song t(w)o the North, these motifs are based on the Wilhelmus. The first motif is introduced by an expressive flugelhorn solo, while the second theme is presented by the trombone solo.
With its rich brass band sound, lyrical solo passages, and impressive tutti moments, Song t(w)o the North is an ideal opening piece for concerts and competitions.
This Grade 5 composition for brass band is suitable for brass bands looking for an original and expressive opening piece with a strong musical identity. Thanks to the combination of virtuosic passages, warm melodic lines, and a powerful finale, Song t(w)o the North is a valuable addition to the contemporary brass band repertoire.
