Brass Quartet No. 1 – Sax Horn Quartet – Lode Violet

Brass Quartet No. 1 by composer Lode Violet was written for the Cosy Brass Quartet. It marks his debut in the brass quartet genre. It was premiered on November 10, 2017 at the Municipal Theatre of Willebroek. It was there that the work first came to life through the distinctive sound of this virtuoso ensemble. With this piece, Violet managed to translate his personal musical style into the intimate but powerful setting of a brass quartet.

The work is composed for Bb Cornet 1, Bb Cornet 2, Eb Tenor Horn and Bb Euphonium. A classic but expressive combination within the brass family. This instrumentation creates a rich and homogeneous sound palette in which both warm lyricism and brilliant articulation come into their own. Violet takes full advantage of these sound possibilities and interweaves technical precision with emotional depth. This makes Brass Quartet No. 1 a challenging and compelling work for performers and listeners alike.

The composition consists of three movements. These are connected by an energetic motif of three notes (Bb, C and F) that sounds as a guideline throughout the work. In the second movement, this motif is resumed in a more contemplative manner. This with a lament that expresses both melancholy and tenderness. The final movement forms a synthesis of the previous parts. In it, dark and dreamy colors merge with a powerful, rhythmic finale.

With Brass Quartet No. 1, Lode Violet confirms his reputation as a versatile young composer within the contemporary brass world. The piece combines modern harmonies with a clear form structure, making it ideal for concert performances, chamber music competitions and educational projects . For brass ensembles looking to expand their repertoire with a work that is both technically challenging and musically sophisticated, this quartet is highly recommended. It is also a pleasant work to listen to.
