Concerto for Luc – B-flat cornet solo and brass band
*Concerto for Luc* is a three-movement concerto for solo cornet and brass band, composed by Lode Violet. The work was commissioned by Erika Pauwels for the memorial concert on Saturday, September 19, 2026—exactly five years after the death of Luc Craps. Luc died on September 14, 2021, at the age of 59, from complications of cancer. Luc Craps was himself a cornetist and a student of Lode Violet. From that personal and musical connection emerged a work in which the cornet takes center stage as the solo instrument, accompanied by a brass band. The composer drew inspiration from musical elements that would have suited Luc both as a musician and as a person. The result is a classically structured concerto for cornet and brass band in three movements, in which Luc’s name also takes on a special musical significance. The name Luc in music: E – G – C
An important element throughout *Concerto for Luc* is the musical representation of the name “Luc.” It is represented by the notes E–G–C. These three notes are incorporated in various ways into themes and motifs and recur throughout the concerto. Thus, Luc is not only the inspiration for the work, but his name is also literally woven into the music.I. Allegro brillante e giocoso
The first movement opens with an ” Allegro brillante e giocoso ” and a lively theme in the Lydian mode. The solo cornet is given a distinctly virtuosic role and engages in a constant dialogue with the brass band. The cornet’s brilliant character takes center stage here and creates a lively opening to the concerto.II. Lento elegiaco
After several cadences, the mood shifts and the concerto transitions into a *Lento elegiaco*. This second movement forms the emotional heart of the work. A plaintive melody develops into an intimate tribute. Virtuosity gives way to stillness, emotion, and remembrance. The warm, lyrical sound of the solo cornet is given full rein here and is supported by the brass band. In this section, the memory of Luc takes on its most personal and moving musical form.III. Rondo
The third movement is a short rondo in which a new theme in 6/8 time is introduced. This new material is interwoven with themes and motifs from the first and second movements. In this way, various recognizable musical ideas recur, linking the three movements together. The music from the past finds a place in the present once again and ultimately brings the concerto to its conclusion.A Musical Tribute to Luc Craps
“Concerto for Luc ” is more than just a virtuosic piece for solo cornet and brass band. Above all, it is a personal musical tribute to Luc Craps. His name, his instrument, and his connection to music form the building blocks of the composition. Virtuosity, memory, and emotion come together in a concerto that aims to keep Luc’s memory alive through music.Other Suggestions
