The Old World Awakens – Maarten Vermeersch – Fanfare

The Old World Awakens is an impressive concert work for fanfare by Maarten Vermeersch, composed for the Fanfare Tenierskring. The three-part work evokes the atmosphere of the Middle Ages without following a set narrative, but with a strong evocation of mysticism, power and awe. The music invites the listener to be transported to a time of castles, knights and legends.

The first movement opens with a mystical character centered on a three-note main theme. Slow melodies and rich chords create a sense of wonder. Gradually, dark and menacing sounds emerge, alluding to the dangers of the period. The tension builds to a powerful climax, after which the music stills and flows into the second movement.

The second movement, a lyrical chorale, is dedicated to Theo, the composer’s son. The title “THE Old world AWAKENS” subtly refers to his name. The serene melody, carried by the saxophone section, symbolizes new life and hope. It forms a tender contrast to the raw power of the surrounding parts and brings peace within the whole.

In the third part awakens the grandeur of the Middle Ages. Bright brass and majestic rhythms bring to life images of kings and battles. The fanfare grows into an imposing finale, in which the three-note theme resounds triumphantly.
