The Forest for the Trees – Wim Bex – Brass Band Score

The Forest for the Trees (score) by Wim Bex is an impressive symphonic poem for brass band that explores the theme of propaganda and truth. The work explores how information and disinformation influence each other, and how difficult it is to discern reality in times of conflict. Through powerful musical contrasts and profound symbolism, the composer questions whether absolute truth even exists.

The piece consists of nine movements, each with its own meaningful title. Together they tell a musical story of deception, manipulation, doubt and ultimately insight. The listener is challenged to look beyond what is visible, to search for truth among the many layers of sound and meaning. The themes of the work – truth, propaganda and perception – are musically interwoven through intervals and motifs that constantly change shape.

The opening movement, All peace and quiet…, sets up an apparent calm that soon gives way to chaos and tension. In Divide and conquer (?) you hear the struggle for power and conviction, while Collateral damage makes human suffering palpable. As the work progresses, there is a growing realization that even “the truth” is only one perspective. The final section, …Unless …, leaves room for reflection: perhaps the ultimate truth does not exist.

With a playing time of approximately twenty minutes and a difficulty level of 6, The Forest for the Trees is a monumental work within the brass band repertoire. It is extremely suitable as a compulsory work or choice piece at a brass band competition. Brassband Willebroek achieved an impressive second place with this work at the European Brass Band Championships in Stavanger, where they eventually captured the European title.
