Above Clouds – Lennert Van Laenen – Wind Orchestra

Above Clouds is an expressive and contrasting work for wind band, composed by Lennert Van Laenen for the JeJu International Composers Competition 2024 . The piece poignantly paints the contrast between heaven and hell, both thematically and musically. The constant tension between light and dark sounds creates a compelling journey full of emotion and energy.

From the first bars, the listener is introduced to the motif that represents hell. This motif recurs in countless forms, each time with a different intensity and color. It forms the restless basis of the work, and sets the tone for the inner struggle that is central. In contrast, Van Laenen places a heavenly theme, based on a traditional folk song of the Jeju Island . This movement brings peace, beauty and hope – a relief after the dark passages that precede it.

The contrasts between the two worlds are enhanced by dynamic tension arcs, unexpected harmonic turns and bold orchestration. The composer constantly plays with perspective, as if light and shadow are chasing each other in an unattainable balance. This musical symbolism reflects the search for balance between good and evil, order and chaos.

With a duration of about eight minutes and difficulty level 5 Above Clouds constitutes a challenging but rewarding addition to the modern wind band repertoire. It is a work that invites musicians and listeners alike to look beyond extremes, discovering the beauty in contrast and reconciliation.

The powerful theme of Above Clouds makes it particularly suitable as a concert work or competition piece for advanced wind bands. The combination of lyrical melodies, rhythmic intensity and refined timbres makes for an immersive listening experience. Every section of the orchestra gets a chance to shine: from warm woodwinds to bright brass and powerful percussion accents.

The music requires not only technical mastery, but also a deeper understanding of the contrasts that Van Laenen has so masterfully woven.
